1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We have used conventions in our opening when designing our horror title. When we look at the title for ' The Exorcist' we can see that the title is bold and clear. This is because an exorcist would write formally, with clear understandable writing. Therefore, we have used conventions from other horrors because our title is bold and clear. However, we have also challenged conventions because the title for ' The Exorcist' is in the colour purple. Whereas, we decided to have a mixture of red and black.

However, we also challenged conventions with the title name. Most horror films involving a exorcist in the story line is shown in the title. For example, ' The exorcist' and ' The last exorcism' both tell us automatically what the film is about. Whereas, we haven't done that. Although, we have given a slight clue into what the film will be about we didn't give it away.

We also used conventions through the costume design. In the scene from 'The last Exorcism' the exorcist is dressed in a shirt and tie as well as some formal trousers. Therefore, we decided to dress our exorcist in formal trousers, a shirt, tie and a smart jumper.

Another way we used conventions, was through the business cards. In 'The Last Exorcism' a bible was used at the start to tell us the genre of the film. We then used this idea, but used business cards to show our genre. On the cards , was the writing ' Elsey's Exorcisms'. The use of this tells us automatically that the film involves exorcists, therefore is a religious movie.

Another way we used conventions was in the setting. In ' Cabin in the woods' the setting was a dark forest because it creates a tense and secluded setting. This gave us the idea to use a forest in a short part of the opening. However, we also challenged conventions because most religious films would include the church and we didn't include it in one of our settings.

The props was also a key part of the opening for conventions. In the conjuring, we can see that there is a noose hanging from the tree. This creates the idea of death and suicide. With our film involving death and suicide we decided to include a close-up of a noose.
