Iconography

What is Iconography and why do we use it?

The visual images and symbols used in a work of art or the study or interpretation of these. We use iconography to help the audience identify the genre of the film. This is because over time we have learnt to associate certain symbols and signs to different film genres.

Some examples of iconography would be seeing long dusty roads, saloons, cowboy hats and horses in a western film. Another example would be seeing a large abandoned house, a normal family and one supernatural entity in a supernatural film.
